Last night I took a dance kinetics workshop through the Yoga Center. It was so much fun! In my heart I love to dance but because of my size I've usually dismissed my desire to move in fear of looking stupid or bumping my huge body into someone. Oh yeah and then there's the whole sweaty factor too. This particular class last night was designed for us "Big Ass" (the Yoga Center offers yoga classes for big booty people - cleverly named "Big Ass Yoga") people so the environment was very comfortable. There were six of us including the instructor and we had a blast!
At the end of the class the instructor was thanking us for sharing our time with her. She also said that she is so thankful to share her love of dance and yoga, dance is her passion. She said her experiences through her practice have been healing for her and it "saved her life". I feel the same way. Besides the obvious health benefits of the exercise of yoga, it is opening me up to trying new things. We've integrated chanting into some of our yoga and I love it. It gives me voice I didn't think I had. Additionally last night, Tara (the instructor) while we were chanting was drumming on a drum she got while studying in India. I asked her about the drumming after class. It turns out she teaches a women's drum circle every other Wednesday at her home. I have ALWAYS wanted to learn how to drum...I think I should contact her for more information. Wednesdays happen to be my most open night of the week. As much as I want to take part in her classes, I am nervous to try something new - or join a group of women who've already established their unit. I don't think though I should worry about it since from what I can tell of Tara she is extremely welcoming and kind and would make me feel like a part of the group even though I'd be new.
The dancing was great. We danced to about seven songs and with each song we moved our body in a different way. Each type of dance focused on opening up and moving different things inside our bodies. For example, one type was geared toward our veins, one was geared toward the water in our bodies, one was geared toward our spine, etc. Basically, though we just danced - free and without judgement. She teaches this class every Saturday afternoon but unfortunately I work. Hopefully she'll offer another workshop.
Taking from a popular quote that seems appropriate today:
"...Love like you've never been hurt, And dance like no one's watching."
